How to Program Genie Garage Door Opener

By

Genie programming depends on the opener's control panel and the remote or keypad model. Older Intellicode openers use a Learn Code button; many newer ones use a Program/Set button with blue and purple indicators. Use the matching steps below. You do not need to erase working remotes just to add or re-pair one.

Program a compatible Genie Intellicode remote

Keep the door in sight and the opening clear because it can move during pairing. These steps cover a compatible Genie Intellicode remote, such as the G1T-BX, on the two common control panels. Universal remotes may need their own setup first.

Older Learn Code control panel

  1. Briefly press Learn Code. The red indicator blinks.
  2. Press and release the remote button. The indicator becomes steady.
  3. Press and release that remote button again. The indicator goes out.
  4. Press the button once more to test door movement.

Program/Set control panel

  1. Hold Program/Set until the round indicator is blue, then release. The long indicator should flash purple.
  2. Press and release the remote button. The long indicator becomes steady purple.
  3. Press and release it again. The indicators flash blue and go out.
  4. Press once more to test.

If the indicators differ, stop and select your equipment in Genie's remote and keypad instructions. Do not keep holding buttons to guess the next mode.

Program a Genie keypad

A keypad has a separate PIN setup before it pairs to the opener. On the GK/GK-R keypad, first-time setup uses 3-5-7, Program, your chosen 3-8 digit PIN, then Program. With the opener in the appropriate learn mode above and the keypad backlight off, enter the PIN and slowly press Up/Down three or four times until the door operates.

WKP, universal and older Genie keypads use different initialization steps. Match the label to the official instructions before entering a sequence. Genie Wi-Fi setup through Aladdin Connect is a separate process from remote pairing.

If programming fails

  • Check compatibility and install the battery type specified for the accessory.
  • Restart the matching learn procedure if its programming window expires.
  • Check that the opener has power and the wall control is not in a lock mode.
  • Erase stored accessories only when removing lost or unwanted access, using the opener's model-specific instructions. Then re-pair devices you want to keep.

A normal power outage or battery change does not usually erase programming. If a compatible remote still fails, opener repair can check the receiver and controls. Call (916) 838-8182.
