How often should I lubricate my garage door?
Most residential garage doors do well with lubrication every three to six months. Your door manual has the final say, and many manufacturers list a twice-a-year schedule. A door that cycles many times a day, or one in a dusty garage, may need attention toward the shorter end of that range.
Signs it is time sooner
- New squeaking from hinges or rollers on a door that otherwise moves smoothly.
- A dry, chattering sound as the door sections roll over the curve of the track.
- Dust buildup on hinge pivots and roller stems after a windy season.
Grinding, binding, or a door that moves unevenly or hangs crooked is different. Those point to worn or damaged parts, and extra lubricant will not fix them. Stop using the door and have it inspected.
What gets lubricated each round
Lubricate only the points your door and opener manuals specify, commonly hinge pivots and serviceable roller bearings or stems, plus the opener rail or screw where its manual calls for it. Leave the tracks, nylon wheel surfaces, sealed bearings and drive belts dry unless the manufacturer says otherwise, and wipe off excess so it does not collect dust. Work on a closed, undamaged door with opener power disconnected. If you are choosing a product, see what lubricant to use.
Pairing it with a yearly check
Lubrication between visits keeps the moving joints quiet, but it does not tell you whether a spring, cable or bracket is wearing. A yearly garage door tune-up includes lubrication along with inspection, tightening, a balance test and opener and safety sensor checks, so the two routines work together.
