Can I repair or replace a garage door cable myself?
Cables look like the easy part of a garage door, but they are the link between the springs and the door's weight. Re-seating or replacing one means controlling the full spring tension first, which takes the same skill and tools as a spring replacement. A cable handled while still loaded can snap back or let the door drop.
What you can do safely
- Look at the cables and drums from the floor without touching them.
- Stop using the opener if the door hangs crooked or one side drops faster.
- Keep people and vehicles clear of the door.
- Leave the emergency release alone on a door with a damaged cable.
- Note what you see when you call: frayed strands, rust, slack, or a cable off its drum.
Signs a cable needs attention
- Broken strands, kinks or rust along the cable, often near the bottom brackets.
- Slack cable instead of a taut one.
- A cable that has come off the drum at the top of the track.
- A door that hangs unevenly or a sudden loud noise during operation.
What a repair visit involves
We release the spring tension safely, inspect both cables and the drums, and replace whatever has failed. Then we confirm the door is balanced and moving evenly. Repair visits carry a $45 diagnostic trip fee, and you approve a written price before work starts. Not sure whether you need a repair or a full replacement?
