Why is my garage door making noise?
Most garage door noise comes from three sources: worn rollers, loose hardware, or dry moving parts that need lubrication. The opener can add its own noise, and a sudden loud bang usually means a spring has broken. Listening for the type of sound and where it comes from narrows it down quickly.
Match the sound to the cause
- Grinding or squealing along the track: worn or dry rollers.
- High-pitched squeaking: dry hinges or roller bearings.
- Rattling or clunking: loose nuts, bolts or hinges.
- Popping near the top of the door: often a spring under uneven strain, or a misaligned section.
- Straining or grinding from the motor: a possible opener gear problem, or an unbalanced door the opener is struggling to lift.
- A sudden bang, then the door will not move: almost always a broken spring or cable.
Door noise or opener noise
Run the door and listen from a safe spot. Noise that travels with the door, at the hinges and rollers, is door hardware. Noise that stays at the motor unit or along the rail is the opener. Older chain-drive openers are naturally louder than belt-drive models, but a new opener will not quiet a door with worn rollers.
What is safe to check
Lubricating the points your manual specifies and keeping the tracks clean are fine on a closed, undamaged door. Popping near the spring, a bang, a straining motor or a crooked door are signs to stop and have it inspected rather than investigate yourself. A repair visit tracks the noise to the specific part and quotes the fix before work starts. For the limits of DIY, see whether you can fix a noisy door yourself.
