A common 2-car garage door is 16 feet wide by 7 feet tall. An 18-foot width provides more room, and 8-foot heights are also common. Measure the vehicles and the opening: the door size is not the same as the garage's interior parking dimensions.

One double door or two single doors
A 16-foot double door offers one shared entrance. Two 8-foot single doors give separate entrances but require additional room for the center pier and framing. They are not interchangeable within the same overall opening without building work.
How to measure before you order
- Record opening width at several points and height on both sides. Keep all measurements for the installer if they differ.
- Measure the clear wall space beside each jamb for track attachment.
- Measure headroom from the opening to the lowest ceiling obstruction.
- Measure clear depth into the garage for the raised door and any opener rail.
For a typical residential sectional door, the opening generally matches the nominal door size. Track and spring clearance is outside that opening. Confirm framing with the installer and the selected door instructions; Clopay explains opening size and headroom.
Custom sizes and cost
An opening that does not match a standard width or height, or a taller door for a lifted truck or roof rack, can be custom built. Larger doors generally cost more, since they use more material and heavier hardware to counterbalance the extra weight.
