Does cold weather mean my garage door needs new springs?
No, cold weather alone is not a reason to replace springs. A cold morning can make a door feel stiffer or louder because lubricant thickens and metal parts contract, and a spring that was already worn can break on any day, cold or not. Temperature does not tell you how much life a spring has left. That depends on its cycle rating, how often the door is used and its condition.
What cold weather can change
- Grease on hinges, rollers and the opener thickens, so the door may move more slowly or make more noise
- The bottom seal and weatherstripping stiffen and can stick to the ground
- Moisture and frost, more common in foothill areas, speed up rust on coils and hardware
- An opener may struggle more if the door was already out of balance
Signs that do point to the springs
If the door has become heavy, moves unevenly, the opener strains on every cycle, or you see rust or a gap in the coils, have it inspected regardless of the season. A loud bang followed by a door that will not lift usually means a spring has broken. See signs your springs are wearing out.
What an inspection looks at
We check corrosion, door balance and the condition of the springs, cables and other hardware, then explain whether replacement is actually needed and which cycle rating suits how often you use the door. For seasonal stiffness and noise without other warning signs, a tune-up with proper lubrication is often the better place to start.
