How much does garage door opener repair cost?
Opener repair cost depends on which part has failed. Sensor alignment, remote programming and wall control problems are on the inexpensive end. A stripped gear kit, a failed logic board or a full opener replacement costs more. A repair visit carries a $45 diagnostic trip fee, and you approve a written price before any work starts.
What the technician checks first
Many opener complaints start at the door, so we test more than the motor:
- Door balance and spring condition, since a binding or unbalanced door overloads the opener.
- The drive system: gears, chain or belt, rail and trolley.
- Safety sensors, auto-reverse, and travel and force settings.
- Remotes, keypad and wall control, including programming.
If the real problem is a broken spring, replacing opener parts would not fix it, and the quote reflects the actual cause.
Repair or replace
Gear kits, logic boards, safety sensors, wall controls, remotes and rail parts are all normal repairs. Replacement makes more sense when parts for your model are no longer made, when the unit has failed repeatedly, or when you want features it cannot support. New residential openers installed in California must include battery backup. When both options are reasonable, we give you both prices. See whether to repair or replace an opener for more on that decision.
Free checks before you call
- Confirm the outlet has power and the GFCI or breaker has not tripped.
- Replace the remote battery.
- Check whether the wall control is in lock or vacation mode.
Do not increase the opener's force setting to push a door that is binding; that hides a mechanical problem and weakens the safety reverse.
