How much does garage door spring replacement cost?
We do not quote spring work sight unseen, because the price depends on the specific spring system on your door. The visit carries a $45 diagnostic trip fee. The technician confirms what broke, identifies the correct replacement, and gives you a written price before any spring is wound.
What changes the spring price
- Torsion or extension: torsion springs sit on a shaft above the opening; extension springs stretch along the horizontal tracks. They are different parts and different work.
- Door weight and size: springs are sized to lift your door's weight. Heavy insulated, wood or oversized doors need larger springs.
- One spring or a pair: on a two-spring door, we inspect both and explain the cost of replacing both, since they have done the same number of cycles.
- Cycle rating: a higher-cycle spring is rated for more openings and closings and costs more.
- Related damage: cables, drums or rollers that failed with the spring, or hardware that was never the right size for the door.
Comparing spring quotes
A loose spring price is not an installed price. When you compare quotes, make sure each one names the spring system, how many springs are included, the cycle rating supplied, and whether removal, balancing and testing are included. Ask for the parts and labor warranty terms in writing; a cycle rating and a warranty are separate things. Our spring replacement cost guide explains what a complete quote should list.
Until the spring is replaced
Stop using the opener, do not pull the release handle with a broken spring, and keep people and cars out from under the door. Spring and cable hardware is under high tension, and adjusting it yourself is not a safe way to save money. See whether you can use a door with a broken spring.
