Can I install garage door safety sensors myself?
Sensors look simple, but they are part of the opener's entrapment protection, the system that keeps a closing door from coming down on a person or pet. Getting them physically onto the wall is not the same as getting them working correctly, which is why the requirements matter more than the tools.
What a correct installation requires
- A compatible pair. Use sensors listed for your opener's exact model. Brands are generally not interchangeable, and mixing an old sensor with a new one causes problems that are hard to trace.
- Power off while wiring. Disconnect the opener's electrical power and any battery backup before touching the wiring.
- Correct mounting. Mount at the height and position the manual specifies, on brackets that will hold alignment.
- Alignment. Both indicator lights should read as the manual describes for a clean beam.
- Testing. Test photo-eye protection and contact reversal separately, following the opener manual.
When to have it done instead
Book an installation if you cannot confirm compatibility, if the existing wiring is damaged, if a bracket or track is bent, or if the opener is old enough that matching sensors are no longer made. In that last case, the honest fix is often a new opener, not a mismatched sensor. Never reuse incompatible sensors or bypass a fault to get the door closing.
What we do
We confirm the sensors are actually the problem, install a matched pair, align them, and test both safety functions before we leave. See our safety sensor service page for what the visit covers.
