Is it okay to use a garage door opener without safety sensors?
Older openers were built before photo-eye sensors became the standard way to protect people in the doorway. Even if the motor still runs smoothly, the door has no way to sense someone underneath it until it makes contact, and on an aging opener that contact reversal may not be reliable either.
Why we won't put one back into service
We fix a lot of things, but we do not return an opener without safety sensors to service. A powered residential door needs the entrapment protection specified for its opener, and photo-eyes are the common system on current models. When we find an opener without them, we explain the risk and quote a replacement opener that has them.
Can sensors be added to an old opener?
Usually not. Sensors have to be compatible with the opener's logic, and openers built without them generally have no way to read a sensor pair. When no approved, compatible sensors exist for an opener, replacing the opener is the safe path.
Until it is replaced
- Keep children, pets and vehicles clear whenever the door moves.
- Watch the door all the way down instead of pressing the button and walking away.
- Stop using it if the door is noisy, heavy, crooked or slow to reverse.
A new opener also brings rolling-code security and options such as battery backup or app control on compatible models. See opener repair and replacement for what a visit covers, and whether to repair or replace an opener for other factors.
