Is an insulated garage door worth it in a hot garage?

It helps, within limits. An insulated door slows the heat that moves through the door itself, which matters on a west- or south-facing door in a Sacramento summer. It will not make an unconditioned garage comfortable by itself, because heat also comes in through the walls, the roof and the gaps around the door.

When an insulated door makes the most sense

• The garage is attached to the house, or there is a bedroom or living space above or beside it.
• You use the garage as a workshop, gym or laundry area.
• The door faces the afternoon sun.
• You are replacing the door anyway, so the extra cost is part of a purchase you were already making.

What else affects the temperature

Worn bottom and perimeter seals let hot air in around the door, so replacing them is often worth doing at the same time. Walls, ceiling insulation and ventilation matter too. If the door is in good shape and you only want some improvement, an insulation kit the door's manufacturer allows may be an option; see whether you can insulate the door you have.
