How can I tell if my garage door is insulated?
The most reliable answer is on paper: the door's model label and the manufacturer's product specification will say whether it is insulated and often list a thermal rating. Looking at the inside of the door helps, but it can mislead in both directions.
Where to look
- Model label: usually a sticker on the inside of the door; its location varies by maker. Note the brand and model number to look up the specification.
- Inside face of the door: exposed foam boards or a backed insulation layer mean it is insulated in some form.
- A second steel skin: a finished steel surface on the inside suggests a layered door, but what is between the skins cannot be confirmed by eye.
- Paperwork: purchase or installation records may name the model.
Knocking on a panel and judging the sound is not a reliable insulation test.
Making sense of what you find
Insulated doors are commonly built either with polystyrene panels fitted to the interior or with polyurethane foam injected between two steel layers. R-value describes resistance to heat flow, and higher is better, but ask whether a rating describes the foam, a section or the whole door. Where provided, a tested whole-door U-factor, where lower is better, compares complete assemblies. Perimeter seals matter too, since gaps let air in regardless of the panels.
If it is not insulated
You can replace it with an insulated door, which comes with a free on-site estimate and a written quote, or ask whether an approved kit fits your current door; see insulating an existing door. Either way, an insulated door moderates garage temperature but does not heat or cool an unconditioned garage.
