How to Maintain a Garage Ceiling Fan

How do I maintain a garage ceiling fan?

Dust the blades regularly, check for loose screws and mounting hardware, and reverse the motor direction with the seasons so the fan helps in both summer heat and winter cold.

Garage fan maintenance comes down to three habits: keep the blades clean, keep the hardware tight, and switch the motor direction with the seasons. Garages collect more dust, sawdust and exhaust grime than indoor rooms, so a garage fan usually needs attention more often than a fan in the house.

Routine care

  • Dust the blades: turn the fan off and let it stop completely. Wipe each blade top and bottom with a damp cloth so the dust does not fly into the garage.
  • Tighten screws: check the blade screws, blade brackets and canopy screws. Loose hardware causes wobble and clicking.
  • Watch for wobble: if it still wobbles after cleaning and tightening, a blade may be warped or out of balance. Many fans include a balancing kit.
  • Check the light kit and pull chains: replace bulbs with the type the fan specifies and make sure the glass is secure.

Seasonal direction

Most fans have a direction switch on the motor housing. In summer, set it so the blades push air down and you feel a breeze, usually counterclockwise when viewed from below. In winter, reverse it and run it on low to gently move warm air from the ceiling without a strong draft. Only flip the switch when the fan is fully stopped.

Safety around the garage door

Close the garage door before setting up a ladder, and do not lean a ladder against the door, tracks or opener rail. When you are done, climb down and move the ladder out of the door's path. Then, standing on the floor clear of the door, run it through a full open and close and watch that the blades still clear the door, tracks and opener; a sagging mount or added light kit can reduce that clearance. If a ceiling fan is moving air but the garage still overheats, the door may be part of the problem; see how to tell if your garage door is insulated.
