Can I keep my garage door when replacing the opener?
An opener replacement and a door replacement are separate jobs. Many homeowners put a new opener on the door they already have. What matters is whether the existing door can be safely and reliably moved by the opener you choose.
What the door needs to pass
- Balance: the springs should hold the door in place when it is lifted partway by hand. An unbalanced door will overload any new opener.
- Smooth travel: no binding, scraping or jerking in the tracks, and rollers and hinges in good shape.
- A sound top section: the opener bracket needs a solid, reinforced spot to attach to. Cracked or weak top panels need repair first.
- Compatibility: the door's type, size and weight must fall within the new opener's supported limits.
When the door needs work first
If the door is damaged, crooked, getting stuck or hard to lift by hand, discuss that before choosing equipment. Worn springs, rollers or hinges are normal repairs and do not mean the whole door must go. Ask for any door repairs to appear as a separate, identifiable part of the estimate.
If you are replacing the door too
If the door itself is near the end of its life, it may make sense to plan both together. New garage doors get a free on-site estimate with a written quote. For the reverse question, see keeping your opener with a new door.
