Why did my garage door opener stop working after a power outage?
An opener that dies right after an outage is not necessarily ruined. Several simpler causes look exactly the same as surge damage, so work from the power supply inward.
Checks to make first
- Outlet power: plug a lamp or phone charger into the opener's outlet to see if it is live.
- GFCI and breaker: garage outlets are often protected by a GFCI, which may be in the garage, a bathroom or outside. Reset it and check the breaker panel.
- Backup battery: if the opener ran on battery during the outage, the battery may be drained. Openers with battery backup depend on its charge and condition.
- Wall control: check that the lock or vacation mode was not switched on.
- Remote versus wall button: if only the remote fails, the remote may need reprogramming.
If the opener has power and still will not run
A surge can damage the logic board or other electronics, but an unrelated control fault can look the same. We verify the power supply and controls first, then inspect the opener for an internal fault. Many of these are repairable.
Getting the car out in the meantime
With the door fully closed, the manual release lets you open it by hand if the door is balanced and the springs are intact. Do not pull the release on an open door, and do not lift a door with a broken spring. See opening a garage door manually.
A compatible surge protector may reduce some future surge damage, but it cannot prevent every electrical fault. Ask about it after the diagnosis.
