Common single-car garage doors are 8 or 9 feet wide and 7 or 8 feet tall. A common double-car door is 16 feet wide, with 18-foot widths available for more room. These are common product sizes, not a measured average of every home.

When a common size is too small
- Vehicle size. Measure your actual truck, van or SUV, including mirrors and roof equipment. Some fit a common opening; others need extra width or height. Check room to open the liftgate inside separately.
- Storage or workspace. Door width is the entrance width. Interior space for vehicle doors, storage and a workshop depends on the garage floor plan.
- Local building codes. Some jurisdictions set minimum or maximum garage door sizes. Check with your local planning office or builder before ordering a custom size.
Opening size is only one measurement
Tracks and springs also need clear side room, headroom and depth behind the opening. A standard-width door can still require a different track arrangement under a low ceiling. Have the installer check those spaces before ordering.
Replacing with a different size
Swapping in a larger or smaller door than the opening you have usually means reframing, which is a bigger job than a straight door swap. A contractor can tell you whether your opening allows a standard size or needs custom work.
