A LiftMaster keypad opens a garage door using a PIN. Identify the keypad and opener models before programming. The example below applies to a compatible 877LM and opener; MAX, universal, 66LM and newer app-assisted keypads can differ. Pairing a keypad and changing a known PIN may also use different steps.
How to set up a LiftMaster keypad
- Confirm the keypad and opener are compatible, then program before mounting. Keep the door in sight and the opening clear.
- Press and release the Learn button on the opener's motor unit.
- Within about 30 seconds, enter a 4-digit code of your choosing on the keypad.
- Press and hold the keypad's Enter button until the opener's light blinks, confirming the code is saved.
After testing, mount the keypad at the manual's specified height, within sight of the door and out of children's reach. Some models support temporary PINs; do not assume they offer separate permanent codes for every person.
Compatibility
LiftMaster keypads are matched to your opener's receiver rather than a single universal standard, so check your opener's model number against the keypad's packaging or manual before buying. Older openers sometimes need a specific keypad or receiver for that generation; a technician can confirm compatibility if you are unsure.
Security and lockout
Radio security and lockout features depend on the keypad and opener generation. Older fixed-code models differ from Security+ models. Choose a private PIN, remove temporary access when it is no longer needed and follow the manual to revoke lost devices.
Maintenance and battery
Most LiftMaster keypads run on a 9-volt battery; check yours once a year and replace it before it fails rather than after. Wipe the keypad and cover clean occasionally, and keep an eye on the weatherproof cover for cracks.

Can I change my code later?
Yes. Use the change-PIN instructions for your keypad model; changing a known PIN can differ from first-time pairing or recovering a forgotten PIN.
My keypad stopped working. What should I check?
Battery first, then make sure nothing is blocking the signal between the keypad and the opener. If it still will not respond, it may need reprogramming or, on an older unit, replacement.
Can a LiftMaster keypad work with other brands of opener?
Some can, but it is not guaranteed. Check compatibility before you buy, or ask us to confirm it for your opener.
