What if my garage door is still noisy after lubrication?
If the door is still noisy after you lubricated the points your manual specifies, the problem is probably not friction. The usual causes are worn rollers or loose hardware, and sometimes the opener drive itself. Adding more lubricant at that point tends to collect dust without changing the sound.
Quick checks that are safe
- Confirm you used a garage-door lubricant, not a general-purpose cleaner that evaporates.
- Check that the tracks are clean and dry. Lubricant on the track can make rollers slip and chatter.
- Watch the door run from a safe distance and note where the sound comes from: a roller, a hinge, the top of the door or the opener.
- Look from the floor for wobbling rollers, cracked hinges or hardware that has backed out.
What not to do
Do not tighten or loosen spring hardware, cable drums, bottom brackets or track supports. The bottom roller brackets anchor spring-loaded cables, and turning the wrong fastener can release that tension. Roller replacement is technician work for the same reason.
What a visit usually finds
On a repair or tune-up visit, the technician tracks the noise to a specific part. Common results are steel rollers with worn bearings, cracked or loose hinges, loose fasteners, or a chain-drive opener that is simply loud by design. Service visits carry a $45 diagnostic trip fee, and you approve a written price before any part is replaced. If you also hear popping near the spring or the door feels heavy, stop using it until it is checked. For hinge-related noise, see whether new hinges make a door quieter.
