Lubricant on the Wrong Garage Door Part? | 1A Garage Doors

What if I put lubricant on the wrong garage door part?

Wipe it off. Clean lubricant from the tracks, weather seals or opener housing with a cloth, then check the product label and component manual, since some sprays can affect plastics and rubber.

Wipe it off as soon as you notice, and in most cases that is the end of it. Overspray on a track, weather seal or opener housing is common. The concerns are that lubricant on running surfaces attracts grit, and some sprays can soften or swell plastics and rubber over time, so check the product label and the component manual for cleanup directions.

How to clean it up by part

  • Tracks: with the door closed and the opener unplugged, wipe the running surface with a dry or lightly damp cloth until it is no longer slick.
  • Weather seals and rubber: clean with mild soap and water, then dry.
  • Opener housing: unplug the opener and wipe the outside. Do not spray cleaner into vents or the motor area.
  • Drive belt: follow the opener manual's cleaning guidance. Belts are not meant to be lubricated.
  • Nylon wheels or sealed bearings: wipe off the excess. These generally do not need spray.

When it needs more than a wipe

Watch the door over the next several uses. Signs that something was affected include rollers slipping or chattering in the track, a seal that feels sticky, swollen or cracked, or a belt that slips. A damaged bottom seal can be replaced, and slipping rollers or a slipping belt should be inspected before they cause more wear. Do not handle springs, cables or bottom brackets to clean them; if product landed there, leave those parts alone and mention it at your next service visit.

Avoiding it next time

Apply lubricant with a straw nozzle or onto a cloth, aim only at hinge pivots and serviceable roller bearings, and keep a rag handy. The reasons tracks stay dry are covered in should you lubricate the tracks.
