Why does my garage door keep breaking after a handyman or DIY repair?
A garage door is a balanced system. Springs, cables, drums, rollers, track and the opener all have to match the door's size and weight. When one part is replaced with the wrong size or type, the door may run for a while, then keep failing in the same place or start wearing out something else.
Common reasons a repair does not hold
- Spring sizing. A spring that is too weak or too strong for the door leaves it out of balance and strains the opener and cables.
- Mismatched parts. Cables, drums or rollers that do not suit the door, or one new part paired with a worn one.
- Track support. Track or brackets that were bent back rather than fixed, or loose mounting.
- Opener settings. Force turned up to push through binding, which hides the real problem.
- Safety protection. Sensors moved, misaligned or bypassed during the earlier work.
Those are possibilities, not conclusions. We identify the actual cause before quoting any correction.
What to tell us when you call
Describe what was changed, who did it if you know, and what the door does now: where it stops, any noise, and whether it hangs level. Photos of parts that were replaced help, as long as you take them from a safe position.
What the inspection covers
We check spring sizing and balance, cables and drums, track support, opener compatibility and settings, and the safety sensors and contact reversal. You get a written price for the actual fault before work starts, and our work carries a warranty on parts and labor. If the door is crooked or making new noises, stop using it until then. See spring replacement for how we size springs.
