Are garage door struts universal?
Struts look like simple metal bars, but they are not interchangeable between doors. Each door manufacturer specifies which reinforcement goes on which section, how long it is, what profile it uses and where it fastens. A bar that spans the width of your door can still be the wrong part if its shape or attachment points do not line up with the door's design.
What has to match
- Length, so the strut spans the section the way the manufacturer intended.
- Profile, the cross-section shape and gauge, which determines how stiff the strut is.
- Mounting pattern, so it fastens at the correct points on the section.
- Added weight, which changes the load the springs have to carry.
Struts and wind ratings
A wind-rated door is engineered and tested as a complete system: sections, reinforcement, track, hardware and fasteners together. Adding a strut to a standard door makes that section stiffer, but it does not turn the door into a wind-rated one. There is also no general "insulated strut" upgrade that substitutes for the manufacturer's design.
Getting the right one
The door model and the section that needs reinforcement decide which strut fits. We size struts against the door's design during a repair or tune-up visit, then check balance and opener reversal, because the added weight affects both. If a panel is already bowing, the cause gets found first, since a bar bolted over a damaged section can hide the real problem. For how many a door needs, see how many struts a garage door needs.
