Do you replace the whole garage door track?
Whether a track gets replaced in full, in part or not at all depends on what the inspection finds. A track pushed out of line by loose brackets can often be realigned and re-secured. Rail with a kink or bend where the rollers run, or track fastened to supports that have pulled loose, usually needs a matched replacement piece rather than a straightening job that leaves a weak spot.
What we look at first
- The vertical and horizontal sections and the curve between them, for bends, flattened spots and twisting.
- Track brackets and the framing they fasten to, since loose or damaged supports let the rail drift.
- Rollers, hinges and cables, because a worn roller or a broken cable is often what pushed the door out of the track in the first place.
- How the door sits in the opening, level and evenly spaced from the track on both sides.
Why matched track matters
Track comes in different widths, gauges and curve radii, and a replacement piece has to fit the door's rollers and the existing layout. A mismatched piece in an otherwise good run can make the door bind or jump at the joint. When we replace track, we match it to the door and then check the whole path the rollers travel, not only the piece we changed.
What the visit involves
Repair visits carry a $45 diagnostic trip fee. After the inspection you get a written price that spells out whether the track is being realigned, partly replaced or fully replaced, plus any rollers, brackets or cables that need attention. Nothing starts until you approve it. Afterward the door is balanced and cycled, and the opener's photo-eye and reversal functions are tested. If your door is already off the track, read whether it is safe to use an off-track door before running it again.
