Can a garage door tune-up improve safety?
Most of what a tune-up checks has a safety side, not only a convenience one. A door can open and close every day while its safety reverse has stopped working, or while a cable frays toward failure. A yearly check is where those problems get found.
Safety checks in a tune-up
- Auto-reverse and sensors. We align the safety sensors and test that the door stops and reverses on an obstruction.
- Force and travel settings. Settings that are too high let the opener push through things it should stop for.
- Balance test. Done with the opener disconnected. An unbalanced door strains the opener and can move unpredictably.
- Springs and cables. Inspected for wear, rust, fraying and slack.
- Rollers, tracks and hinges. Checked for wear and alignment, with loose hardware tightened.
- Lubrication. The right product on hinges, rollers, bearings and springs.
What a tune-up does not do
A tune-up services and adjusts what is already there. A broken spring, frayed cable or cracked panel is a repair, priced separately so you can decide. Learn more in the difference between a tune-up and a repair.
How often and what it costs
Once a year suits most households, sooner for a door that runs many cycles a day or is showing early wear. Service visits carry a $45 diagnostic trip fee, and we quote the tune-up before starting. If we find a part that needs replacing, you get that price in writing before any work. See our garage door tune-up page for details.
