Will opening a garage door manually damage it or void the warranty?
The emergency release exists so you can move the door without the opener. Using it the way the manufacturer intends is normal operation, not abuse. The problems people run into come from releasing a door that should not be released, or from how the door is handled afterward.
What actually causes damage
- Releasing an open or partly open door. Without the opener holding it, the door can fall, bending panels and track and putting anyone underneath at risk.
- Releasing a door with a broken spring or cable. The door can drop or twist out of its tracks.
- Using the cord to lift or lower the door. The cord is only for the release, not a handle.
- Forcing a door that binds. Pushing through resistance can bend rollers, hinges or track.
- Running the opener with a manual lock engaged. This can strain the opener and the door.
- Reconnecting incorrectly. Follow the manual to reset the release with the door closed.
About warranties
Manufacturer warranty terms differ by door and opener. Read the warranty and manual for your equipment, since they describe how the release should be used. Following those instructions is the surest way to stay within the terms. Work we do carries our own warranty on parts and labor.
Before you pull it
Confirm the door is fully closed, level and undamaged, and disconnect the opener's power. If you are not sure the door is safe to release, see when it is safe to open a garage door manually or our manual release guide.
