What if the garage door release cord is stuck or hard to reach?
The release should disengage with a firm pull in the direction your opener manual shows. When it will not, something is usually loading the mechanism or wearing it out, and yanking harder can damage the trolley or leave you standing under a door that suddenly moves.
Why a release sticks
- The door is under load. If the door is binding, partly open or pressed against the floor, the trolley can be too tight to release.
- Rust or wear. Corrosion or worn parts in the trolley can keep the release from moving.
- Damage. A bent trolley, frayed cord or missing handle.
- A different design. Not every opener uses a straight downward pull. Check the manual for yours.
If the cord is hard to reach
Do not climb a ladder beneath the door or stand under a door that is open or partly open to grab the cord. If the door is closed and safe, a stable step stool placed outside the door's path is reasonable. If the handle has been tied up or the cord has broken, note it and have it fixed rather than improvising a new cord. Some doors also have an outside release with a key near the top of the door.
When to call
If the release will not disengage, the door is not fully closed, or the door seems damaged, leave it and call. Our trolley guide explains the part the release connects to. A stuck release is worth looking at during a service visit, and you approve a written price before any work starts. For a door you cannot secure, see emergency repair.
