What is the difference between standard and high-cycle garage door springs?
The main difference is how many cycles each spring is designed to handle. One cycle is the door opening and closing once. Standard springs, the kind most builders install, are commonly rated around 10,000 cycles. High-cycle springs are commonly rated from 20,000 to 50,000 or more. Both types lift the door the same way when they are correctly sized.
How they are built differently
To last longer, a high-cycle spring is designed to run at lower working stress while still delivering the torque the door needs. That usually means a different wire size and a longer spring. As a result, high-cycle springs often look thicker or longer than the standard spring they replace.
What stays the same
- Feel. A correctly sized high-cycle spring gives the same balanced movement. It does not guarantee quieter operation.
- Tension and safety. It carries the same serious tension hazard. A higher rating does not mean winding it tighter.
- Sizing. Either type must match the door's weight, height and hardware.
What the rating does and does not tell you
A cycle rating is a design estimate. A 10,000-cycle spring used four times a day reaches its rating in about seven years, and a higher-rated spring takes proportionally longer at the same use. Corrosion, sizing and maintenance still affect real life, so no rating guarantees a set number of years. To decide which one suits your door, see whether high-cycle springs are worth the extra cost.
