How do I know if my garage door has high-cycle springs?
Sometimes you can tell by looking, but often you cannot be sure without a closer check. High-cycle springs tend to use thicker wire or be longer than a standard spring for the same door, and some carry a manufacturer's tag showing the cycle rating. Paperwork from an earlier spring replacement may also list it.
What you can check without touching the springs
- A tag or label. Look from the floor for a tag on or near the spring.
- Service records. An invoice or warranty sheet from the last spring job may name the rating or part.
- Original builder springs. If the springs are original to the house, they are often standard builder-grade springs rated around 10,000 cycles.
- Size compared with the door. Springs that look unusually long or heavy for an ordinary residential door may be a high-cycle set.
Why looks alone can mislead
Wire size and length also change with the door's weight and height, so a thick spring on a heavy door may still carry a standard rating. Tags fade, rust or go missing over the years. Measuring a spring means getting close to a part under high tension, so leave measuring and inspection to a technician.
Getting a clear answer
Ask us to check when we are out for a service visit, such as a tune-up or a repair. If the springs need replacing, we can compare a standard and a higher-cycle option sized for your door. For what the difference means in practice, see how the two types differ.
