Can I install a garage door opener myself?
Many residential openers are designed for homeowner installation, and the manual walks through the process. Doing it correctly matters, though. Incorrect installation can cause safety problems or affect the warranty.
Before you start
- Have a technician confirm the springs are sound and the door is balanced. An opener on an unbalanced door wears out early and may not reverse reliably. Never adjust springs yourself.
- Check that the opener is rated for your door type, size and weight.
- Confirm there is an outlet in the right place. New outlets or fixed wiring need an electrician.
- Make sure there is solid structural framing for the header bracket and supports.
Where DIY installations go wrong
- Sensors mounted too high or out of alignment, which causes constant reversing or no protection at all. Sensors go no higher than six inches off the floor.
- Force set too high to push a binding door, which weakens the safety reverse.
- Brackets fastened to drywall or a door panel that is not reinforced.
- Skipping the photo-eye and contact-reversal tests the manual requires.
When professional installation makes sense
If you are not comfortable with ladders, electrical connections or setting travel and force, have it installed. Professional installation also makes sense when the door needs work first or you are replacing an opener with remotes, keypads or car controls you want to keep.
