How to Program a Garage Door Remote

How do I program a garage door remote?

Most remotes are programmed with the opener's Learn button: a brief press, then the remote button during the programming window. The exact sequence depends on your opener and remote model, so use both manuals.

On many openers, you briefly press and release the Learn button on the motor unit, then press and hold the remote button while the programming window is open. The opener's light usually blinks or clicks to confirm. That general pattern is common, but the details change between brands and receiver generations.

Before you start

  • Find the opener model and the remote model. A remote has to match the receiver generation; shared branding is not enough.
  • Use a step stool or ladder safely to reach the Learn button on the motor unit.
  • Keep the doorway clear of people, pets and vehicles during programming and testing.

Mistakes that cause trouble

  • Holding the Learn button too long: on many openers this erases every stored remote and keypad.
  • Missing the window: the opener only listens for a short time after Learn is pressed. If nothing happens, start the sequence again.
  • Using the wrong instructions: sequences differ by generation, so a guide for another model may not work.

Car-based controls such as HomeLink have their own pairing process. See syncing an opener to your car.

When it will not pair

If a new remote will not program, it may not be compatible with your receiver, or the receiver itself may have a fault. Extra remotes and keypads are quick for us to program, and we can do it while we are already there for another repair.
