Why did my garage door spring break so soon?
Springs wear out by cycles, not by the age of the house or door, so a spring can break years before you expect it to. Many newer homes come with builder-grade springs rated around 10,000 cycles. At four full cycles a day, that is about seven years, and a household that opens the door more often uses those cycles up faster. Even then, the rating is an estimate, not a guaranteed lifespan.
Common reasons for an early break
- Heavy use. If the garage is your main entrance or several drivers use it, the door may cycle far more than four times a day.
- Wrong size. A spring that does not match the door's weight and height is under more stress on every cycle.
- Corrosion. Rust on the coils creates weak spots and friction.
- Other worn hardware. Binding rollers, bent track or an out-of-balance door add strain.
- A low-rated replacement. An earlier repair may have used a lower cycle rating than the door's use called for.
If springs keep breaking
Repeated failures usually point to a sizing or usage mismatch, and the cause has to be confirmed by inspecting the door. When a spring is replaced, ask for its documented cycle rating and whether it suits your daily use. A high-cycle spring is often worth considering after a second failure on the same door.
What to do now
Stop using the door and opener, and do not pull the emergency release. A broken spring can leave the door too heavy to lift safely. We inspect the whole system and explain the replacement options for your door. To weigh an upgrade, see whether high-cycle springs are worth it.
