Should I convert my old extension springs to torsion springs?
It depends on your door and garage, not on the spring type alone. Extension springs are safe when they are correctly sized, maintained and fitted with intact containment cables. A torsion system has different mounting and clearance requirements, so conversion only makes sense where there is room above the door and the door and hardware suit it. We inspect the setup and quote either a repair or a conversion where appropriate.
When conversion is worth discussing
- The containment cables are missing or damaged and the old hardware is worn throughout
- Springs, pulleys and cables all need replacing at the same time
- You prefer a spring that stays on its shaft if it breaks, instead of relying on a containment cable
- You are already making major changes to the door or track system
When repairing the extension system is fine
If the door is in good shape, the tracks and pulleys are sound and only the springs need replacing, a correctly matched pair of extension springs with good containment cables is a reasonable choice. Converting does not guarantee a longer spring life. How long any spring lasts depends on its cycle rating, its sizing and how often the door runs.
What we look at
- Headroom above the door and space for a shaft and mounting plates
- Door weight, height and panel condition
- Condition of the tracks, pulleys, cables and opener
- How often the door is used each day
Both systems are under high tension, so neither a repair nor a conversion is a do-it-yourself job. For background, see how torsion and extension springs differ.
