A garage screen door is a mesh panel, retractable, sliding or roll-up, that mounts over the garage opening so you can leave the door up for airflow and light without letting in bugs. It typically installs over or beside the main garage door and does not replace it. Types and buying notes below.
Types
- Retractable: spring-loaded, pulls back into a housing when not in use.
- Sliding: panels move along a track, suited to wider openings.
- Roll-up: rolls up out of the way; price and installation depend on the frame, size and operating system.
What to check before buying
- Mesh material (commonly fiberglass or aluminum) and frame material (aluminum, wood or vinyl).
- Size against your garage door opening; single garages are commonly around 8 by 7 feet, double garages around 16 by 8 feet, but measure your own opening.
- Whether it is rated for your local weather, and whether a latch is included. A screen latch does not make mesh a security barrier.
- Whether the design lets you still operate the main garage door without removing the screen first.
Installing and maintaining one
Basic roll-up and sliding models are generally a DIY install with common tools; retractable or motorized versions more often call for professional installation. Upkeep is mostly keeping the track clean and repairing small tears in the mesh before they spread.

Will a screen door stop me from using my garage door normally?
Follow the screen's operating sequence. Some must be retracted before the main door moves. Keep screen hardware and fabric clear of the main door's travel, tracks and safety sensors.
Does a screen door affect home security?
It is not a security barrier on its own, mesh can be cut, so treat it as a bug and airflow solution, not a replacement for locking the main garage door.
