Garage Door Spring Replacement in Sacramento

What to do right now

• Stop pressing the opener button. A broken spring leaves the door improperly balanced and can overload the opener or cause further damage.
• Do not pull the red release handle when a spring is broken, even if the door is closed. An open door can fall, and a closed door may be too heavy to lift safely.
• Keep people and cars out from under the door and leave it where it is.
• If the door is stuck open and the house cannot be secured, tell us on the call. Emergency repair.

Torsion or extension springs

Most two-car doors here use a torsion spring, or a pair, on a shaft above the opening. Older one-car doors often use stretch extension springs running along the horizontal tracks. We select the spring dimensions and lifting capacity for the door and discuss the cycle rating, and replace the cables or drums when they failed along with the spring.

Why we replace springs in pairs

On a two-spring system, both springs have usually completed the same number of cycles. We inspect the pair and explain the cost of replacing both; the remaining spring's exact failure date cannot be predicted. On a door built with a single spring, we fit the correct size for the door weight.

What it costs

The installed price depends on the spring system, door size and cycle rating. Additional work may be needed when the door is unusually heavy, when cables, drums or rollers failed with the spring, or when the hardware on the door was never the right size for it. Repair visits carry a $45 diagnostic trip fee, and you get a firm number before we wind a new spring.

3. We install, balance the door by hand, and set the opener so it is not fighting the spring.

How long a new spring lasts

Springs are rated in cycles, and one cycle is the door going up and down once. A 10,000-cycle rating works out to roughly seven to nine years at three or four complete cycles daily. It is a design rating, not a guarantee or a way to predict the date a spring will break. If your door runs more than that, ask us about a higher cycle rating when we quote it.
