Can I adjust garage door spring tension myself?
We do not recommend adjusting spring tension yourself. On a torsion system, adding or removing tension means turning the spring's winding cone with winding bars while the spring is loaded, which is the same work and the same risk as a full replacement. Extension spring adjustments involve holding the door in place while moving hooks or cables, and a mistake can drop the door or let a part come loose under tension.
What you can safely check
You can tell whether tension may be off without touching the springs. Watch for these signs:
- The door drifts up or drops when it is partway open
- The opener strains, slows or reverses on the way up
- The door sits unevenly or lifts higher on one side
- The door feels much heavier than it used to
A simple balance check is covered in how to check your garage door's balance. If a spring looks gapped, a cable is loose or the door is already unsafe, skip the test and keep clear.
Why correct tension matters
Springs should carry most of the door's weight. Too little tension leaves the opener lifting the difference, which shortens its life. Too much can make the door drift upward on its own. Tension that keeps needing changes can also mean the springs are worn out or the wrong size for the door, and adjusting them again only puts off the real fix.
What a technician does
We confirm the door, cables and drums are safe, set the tension for the door's weight, then check balance by hand and test the opener and its safety reversal. If the springs are worn or mismatched, we explain the replacement options and the written price before any work.
