Can I replace a garage door spring myself?
It is technically possible, but it is not a job we recommend for homeowners. The spring lifts most of the door's weight, and both torsion and extension systems hold that energy under high tension. If a winding tool, the spring itself, a hook or a set screw slips during replacement, the energy releases at once and can cause serious injury.
Why spring replacement is different from other repairs
- Torsion springs are wound on a shaft above the door with winding bars, and the same technique is used whether you are adjusting or fully replacing a spring.
- Extension springs stretch along the side tracks and depend on hooks, pulleys and containment cables that all have to be in good shape.
- The new spring must be sized to the door's weight, height and hardware. The wrong size leaves the door out of balance and strains the opener.
- Cables, drums and bottom brackets are often worn at the same time and are under the same tension.
What to do instead
Stop using the door, leave the emergency release alone and keep people and cars clear. A broken spring can leave even a closed door too heavy to lift safely. Call (916) 838-8182 to check availability.
What a professional replacement includes
The technician makes the door safe, confirms what broke and gives you a written price before work starts. After installing correctly sized springs, they balance the door by hand and set the opener so it is not fighting the spring. Repair visits carry a $45 diagnostic trip fee.
