How do I choose the right garage door opener?
Fit comes first and features second. An opener has to suit the door it moves and the space it mounts in. Only once that is settled does it make sense to compare noise, convenience and price.
Step one: confirm fit
- Door type, size and weight: check the model's supported limits. Heavy wood or insulated doors may need a model rated higher than a basic steel door.
- Door condition: the springs should be sound and the door balanced. A binding door should be fixed before an opener is chosen.
- Mounting space: ceiling height, headroom and framing for overhead units.
- Wall-mount units: these need a compatible torsion shaft and enough side clearance. Ceiling space alone does not establish fit.
Step two: choose a drive type
- Chain: usually the lowest cost and the loudest. Fine for detached garages.
- Belt: quieter, a good fit with a bedroom or living space above or beside the garage.
- Wall-mount: quiet and frees the ceiling for storage, if the door system is compatible.
Step three: features you will use
New residential openers installed in California require battery backup. Beyond that, think about who needs access: how many remotes, whether a keypad helps, and whether you want phone control. Ask which features are standard and which need extra equipment, setup or an account. Remotes and keypads from the old opener are not automatically compatible.
