Can I reuse the rail, keypad or remotes from my old opener?
It helps to split the old equipment into two groups. The mechanical drive parts almost never carry over, while the controls sometimes do. A new opener typically comes with the rail and hardware it needs.
Rail, trolley and arm
These parts are built to work with a specific opener model. Chamberlain recommends replacing the old rails and related components when installing a new opener, and other manufacturers specify their own parts too. The new model's instructions should decide what gets installed, and the estimate should say what is included. A rail that looks similar can still have a different trolley, length or attachment.
Remotes, keypads and car controls
- Remotes: a remote that runs the old opener is not automatically compatible with the new receiver, even within the same brand.
- Keypads: the same applies. Share the keypad model before equipment is chosen. See keypad compatibility.
- Car controls: built-in vehicle systems may need reprogramming or an added adapter, depending on the opener.
Sensors and wall control
Safety sensors and wall controls are usually matched to the opener and are typically supplied with it. Ask which devices will be fitted and whether existing wiring needs inspection or replacement.
What to tell the installer
List every remote, keypad and car you want to keep using, with model details where possible. Then ask whether programming or extra equipment is needed for each one before the installation is priced.
