Will a garage door keypad work with my current opener?

In most homes the answer is yes, but the brand alone does not settle it. Openers from the same company can use different radio frequencies and security technology depending on their age, so a keypad that pairs with one model may not pair with another.

What decides compatibility

• Model and generation. Older openers sometimes need a keypad made for that generation, or an added receiver, to work at all.
• Frequency and code type. The keypad has to speak the same radio language as the opener, including its rolling-code system.
• Wireless or hardwired. Wireless keypads run on a battery and need no wiring. Hardwired keypads connect to the opener and only suit openers built for them.
• Brand-specific or universal. Universal keypads exist and work across many systems, but check the exact model before buying.

How to find your opener model

The model number is on a label on the opener's motor unit, usually on the side or back. Tell us the brand and model when you call. Send a photo of the label only if you can read it safely without climbing or going under a damaged door.
