Can I set more than one code on a garage door keypad?
Many homeowners assume every person can get a personal code, but most residential keypads do not work that way. The common setups are one main PIN, sometimes with one temporary PIN, or one PIN for each door when a single keypad runs more than one opener.
What different keypads allow
- Single PIN. Everyone who uses the keypad shares the same code.
- Main PIN plus a temporary PIN. Useful for a house sitter, dog walker or contractor. Remove it as soon as that access should end.
- One PIN per door. A keypad that controls two openers may hold a code for each door, not a code for each person.
Other ways to give separate access
If you need to know who opened the door or to remove one person without changing everyone's code, a keypad may not be the right tool. Extra remotes or a smart opener with individual app users can do that on compatible systems. Remember that changing the keypad PIN does not remove remotes, other keypads or app users, so each needs its own step. Our keypad reset guide explains the difference between changing a PIN and erasing access.
Setting it up
When we install or program a keypad, we tell you what your model can do and set up the codes with you. We also show you how to change the main code and, if the model supports it, how to add and remove a temporary one so you are not relying on us every time access changes.
