Is a garage door keypad secure?
Modern keypads send a new code with each use, which makes recording and replaying the signal ineffective. That protection only covers the radio link. The PIN is the part people actually get past, usually because it was shared, guessed or never changed.
Keep the PIN private
- Avoid obvious codes such as 1234, your house number or a birth year.
- Change the code after moving into a home, after a roommate or tenant leaves, and after work crews finish.
- Remove a temporary PIN as soon as the access it was for has ended.
- Look at the keypad now and then. Worn or shiny buttons can reveal which digits you use, and a worn pad is a sign it needs replacing.
Close other gaps too
Changing the keypad PIN does not erase remotes, other keypads or app users. If a remote is lost or you have just moved in, use the opener manual's procedure to erase stored devices, then reprogram the ones you keep. Keep remotes out of sight in parked cars. Some wall controls also have a lock mode that blocks remote signals while you are away; check whether yours does.
When an upgrade makes sense
Older fixed-code openers and keypads do not have the same radio protection as rolling-code systems. If your keypad or opener is from that era, ask about a compatible replacement. We cover keypads on our keypad installation page and opener upgrades under opener repair.
