What information should I have ready before a garage door service call?
A few details make it much more likely the technician arrives with the right parts. The most useful are photos taken from a safe position, the opener's make and model if you can read it, the door's size, and a short description of what it is doing. Never go under a damaged door or climb a ladder just to read a label; we can get that on site.
A checklist for repair calls
- The symptom: what happened, any noise like a loud bang, and whether the door is open, closed or crooked.
- Photos: the whole door from inside and outside, and the springs above the door if you can see them from the floor.
- Door size: width and height if known, and whether it is wood, steel, insulated or a one-piece door.
- Opener details: brand and model from the label, if readable without climbing.
- Number of doors: if more than one needs attention.
For opener installation calls
- The existing opener's make and model, or a note that this is the first opener for the door.
- The problem you want to solve, such as noise, no battery backup or an unreliable unit.
- The controls or features you want, like a keypad, smartphone control or extra remotes.
Access and scheduling details
- Your address, a callback number and how to reach the garage.
- Gate codes, gate list instructions or HOA rules.
- Dogs, locked side gates, or which building the door is on for rural properties.
- For rentals, who is authorizing and paying for the work.
Even with good information, some repairs need an ordered part or a second visit. See whether a repair can be finished in one trip.
